Mary Jo Caffrey - Fiction/Poetry

Mary Jo enjoys writing everything from poetry to prose. Her writing habit developed while editing a 200-page family memoirs book several years ago. From that beginning, Mary Jo wrote a yet-unpublished book of narrative poems about small town life in Ravenna, Nebraska. Mary Jo also enjoys writing humorous poems for children and adults. Her current work in progress is a quirky mystery novel. In her college days, Mary Jo’s poems were included in college publications at Hastings College, Kearney State, and the College of St. Mary. Mary Jo Caffrey is a native Nebraskan with a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Kearney State College and a Master’s in Human Relations from the University of Oklahoma. Her last academic work was updating her teaching certificate through the College of St. Mary in Omaha. She and her husband Larry are both retired from the United States Air Force and live in Gretna, Nebraska. In the service, Mary Jo lived several years in Belgium supporting the NATO mission. Her last duty assignment was in the Command Center of US Strategic Command. Mary Jo joined the Nebraska Writer’s Workshop in 2006 and highly recommends this group to everyone interested in honing writing skills.

Bill Emsick, Jr - Fiction

Bill Emsick, Jr. is new the the Nebraska Writers Workshop. He has lived in Omaha the majority of his life, but home in his heart continues to be his childhood place, Montana. Bill's main focus of writing is in fiction - anywhere from children's stories to thrillers. Bill has had one story published in a literary journal. Rhonda M. Hall - Fiction/Screenwriting

Rhonda joined NWW in January 1993. As of 2007 she has written four novels, four screenplays and several short stories. Her published credits include a monthly column in Women's Edition Magazine and the United Methodist Review. Her novels and screenplays have laugh out loud humor and powerful pathos. Since 2000 she has worked in the telecommunications industry, but is always optimistic that she will publish her novels and have her screenplays optioned.

Terry Hickman - Fiction

Terry HickmanTerry is a biologist working for the government and is happiest in the swamp. She writes science fiction and dabbles in the horror genre. Her muse is fed by her highly suspect musical tastes (industrial, thrash, heavy metal, indie, etc). David Prinz Hufford - Poetry

Hufford, David Prinz, Poet. Although chiefly a poet, David Hufford has written songs and other lyrics, and is working on two different novels. He has recently finished a book of meditations for which he is seeking a publisher. His poetry publications include over one hundred poems in over ten periodicals and anthologies, such as “Haunted Flowers,” in the Cloverdale Review; “Dark Man Inside,” in Triton’s Ariel XIII—judged by poet Li-Young Lee; “Learning Steps,” in Full Circle XVI; and “For the Fathers in the Ice,” in Iowa Western Community College’s Backroads 19. His poem “Amber Flashback” received an Honorable Mention in the Writer’s Digest 2006 Annual Poetry Competition. He has also published a chapbook of poetry, On Winds of Rain: Distractions and Distances, David Hufford is also an active reader, performing hundreds of times in over 25 venues.

James McGowan - Fiction

James McGowan's horror short story "Sleep Talker" will appear in the August 2007 issue of Sounds of the Night from Sam's Dot Press.  He currently seeks publication of The False Pact, the first science fantasy novel in the Players of the Game series.  It focuses on a group of heroes who battle against the invasion of an evil empire, but discover that it is part of an immortal sadist's game.  James also revises Repenter, the second book in the Players of the Game series.  An evil man must become something better or something worse in order to save his daughter, all for the entertainment of the same undying manipulator."

Janet Syas Nitsick - Fiction/Inspirational

Janet Syas Nitsick, daughter of late Nebraska State Sen. George Syas and Best of the Year book winner from Christianstoryteller.com, is the author of SEASONS OF THE SOUL, stories dedicated to lifting the spirit. The book includes personal accounts of her two very different autistic sons and faith fictional stories and is available at most bookstores. It can also be ordered in the paperback or audio on-line at www.JanetSyasNitsick.com. A recent NWW member, Janet finds the workshop a valuable tool in creating a new novel set at the beginning of the 20th century and loosely-based on her grandfather's life.

Lari O'Niel - Fiction

Having pursued careers first in the recording industry, and then in science and health care, Lari has recently been exerting the effort required to make writing a nearly full time endeavor. She knew she would turn to the profession eventually; writing is in her blood. Lari's father is a screenwriter and one of her fondest childhood memories is the late night lullaby of his typewriter. Lari has written humorous essays, poetry, and a children's story about a girl and her rock, entitled "The Little One." She is now working on a novel, "Pin Striped Man," about twin sisters, one mysteriously going blind, and the other followed by a stranger wearing a pin-striped suit. When her persistence pays off with publication, Lari will remember to acknowledge the generous support of NWW and all who go there, despite the fact that her hair prevents her from personally attending NWW gatherings.

Kim Stokely - Fiction/Screenwriting

Kim Stokely has a B.F.A. in Drama from the University of Connecticut and a Masters in Dramatic Communication from Regent University. She has performed and spoken at churches, retreats and conferences throughout the United States. Her plays, monologues and skits have been used in worship services in several churches. She is currently finishing edits on her first novel, Instead of Ashes, which won second place in Adult Fiction at the “Hearts of America Writer’s Conference.” She has begun a second novel on the life of the Old Testament judge, Deborah.

Charlie Vogel - Fiction

Charlie Vogel has been a fiction writer for twenty years.  He is an active member of the Nebraska Writer’s Workshop and the Nebraska Writers Guild, and he has attended several writing workshops in the metro area as well as a few conferences.

Sally J. Walker - Fiction/Screenwriting

Sally J. WalkerFull-time professional writer Sally J. Walker's published credits include novels, stage plays, poetry, and many magazine articles on the craft of writing. She just completed her 23rd screenplay and has Hollywood representation. She is a small press Editorial Director, a member of several national and local writing organizations and teaches writing seminars based on what has worked for her. Married to an engineer who is also a competitive bagpiper, Sally avidly promotes both her Scottish and Irish heritage in her spare time. Shawn Watson - Screenplays

After earning a Bachelor Degree in Economics from Loras College in 1994, I realized writing my was true calling.  I began by writing short stories and poems, eventually growing into screenwriting.  My first screenplay "Forty Days" was a finalist in the Great Plains Film Festival Script contest.  I've since drafted 2 novels and a total of 11 screenplays (#12 coming soon).  My script "Our Lady of Omaha" made the final cut of the 2007 Omaha Film Festival screenplay competition.   I still write the occasional poem and actively pursue a screenwriting career, specializing in comedies.
